The Creality K3 Is Ready to Rip — Are You?
The K3 is one of the fastest open-source printers on the market right now, and it shows in every print. But before you hit that first print button, there are five things you should know that will save you hours of failed prints and frustration.
1. Your Filament Quality Will Be Exposed
At the speeds the K3 is capable of, low-quality filament has nowhere to hide. Diameter inconsistencies cause under-extrusion. Moisture-absorbed spools cause bubbling and stringing. Before you even slice your first file, make sure you're running a premium filament. Filentra PLA+ and PETG are vacuum-sealed and manufactured to ±0.02mm tolerance — tight enough for the K3 at full speed.
2. Bed Levelling Is Non-Negotiable
The K3's speed means any bed levelling inconsistency gets amplified across your first layer. Take the time to run a proper mesh bed level before your first print. A good first layer is the foundation of every successful print.
3. Start With PLA+ Before Moving to PETG
Even experienced printers should start with PLA+ on a new machine. It's more forgiving, easier to tune, and will help you establish your baseline settings quickly. Once your K3 is dialled in on Filentra PLA+, switching to PETG is straightforward.
Recommended starting settings for Filentra PLA+ on the K3:
- Nozzle: 215–225°C
- Bed: 60°C
- Speed: 150–200 mm/s (start conservative)
- Cooling: 100% after layer 1
4. Dry Your Filament if It's Been Sitting Out
South Africa's coastal humidity is no joke. If your filament has been sitting out for more than a few days, dry it before printing. Even Filentra's vacuum-sealed spools should be dried if the seal has been open for a while. 65°C for 4–6 hours in a filament dryer or oven will get you back to optimal.
5. Give Your Slicer Profile Time
The K3 is fast enough that your default slicer settings may not be optimised for it. Spend time dialling in your profile — acceleration, jerk, and pressure advance settings in particular. The payoff is worth it: once tuned, the K3 with Filentra filament produces exceptional results.
